WordPress still powers an extraordinary amount of the web, and for good reason — it is a genuinely capable CMSCMS: A content management system — software that lets you create, edit and organise the words, images and other content on a website without writing code. when it is built well. The problem is that most WordPress sites are not built well. They are assembled from heavy themes and a dozen plugins, then left to rot.

I take the opposite approach: lean, purpose-built themes, custom blocks where they earn their place, and plugins written for the specific job rather than pulled off the shelf. The result is a site that is fast, that editors actually enjoy using, and that does not need rebuilding every two years.

When a project calls for it, I will take WordPress headless — running it purely as a content back-end with a modern front-end in front. Same familiar admin, far better performance.
